I really enjoyed this film and enjoyed re-watching it with the commentary by Professor Brian Cox, the scientific consultant for the movie.

Those reviewers who are stating that the science is poor (or even “ridiculous”) may not have listened to this commentary. There are some errors, which Cox points out, but the overall idea is not impossible, or even so farfetched as to be ‘virtually impossible’.

Professor Cox is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in Particle Physics at the University of Manchester who also works on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva. In his commentary he mentions discussing with other scientists at CERN about the Q-ball hypotheses and relevance to sun-dying and restarting in the movie. (Incidentally, he seems to believe the existence these super-symetrical (or super-stable) objects will be proven (by CERN) within the next 10 years or so.) His problems with science in the movie tend to be some of the smaller issues (for example – the craft orbiting Mercury a few times, rather than just a ’sling-shot’ use).

His statement on what the penultimate scene means to him (even if it only occurs in a ‘billionth of a second’, or in ‘the mind’) is wonderful, and really impressed upon me the beauty, wonder, and awe many scientists hold for the universe. I think some reviewers only saw this scene in a literal earth-based perception of time and were put-off by it. Again, it’s not necessarily meant to be seen that way. (And as mentioned earlier, Professor Cox’s comment on its magnificence is inspiring.)

Another criticism reviewers have mentioned was why so many unstable people were picked for these missions. Again, I think these reviewers may have missed something covered briefly in the film itself, and then more in depth in the commentaries. The people picked were stable and generally the very best in their field. Something with gravity, radiation, or another undefined characteristic of the sun caused mental problems . . . this was the reason the second mission included a psychologist, and the reason he was experimenting with the impact of sunlight exposure. I also think the writer was using individuals to highlight various aspects of human nature, but that might just be me.

All that being said, this is not a Star Wars type of film. If that is what you are looking for, you may well be disappointed. On the other hand, it is a bit less obscure in meaning and plot than films like Solaris, and maybe even a bit easier to grasp on the first viewing than 2001, and, for me at least, imparted much of the wonder and awe that those films did.

To anyone choosing to see this film on DVD, I’d recommend watching it, and then watching it again (or at the very least, the last five minutes of it) with Cox’s commentary. In my opinion his comments make a really enjoyable film even better.

Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008.

Ground breaking director Danny Boyle has done it again with sci-fi action-adventure film “Sunshine.” It is something you have never seen before. The film takes place in 2057. The sun is dying and mankind faces extinction. The Earth’s last hope lies in the hands of the crew on Icarus II. Attempting to fly to the sun and launch a massive nuclear weapon into it to ignite the fading star. Out of the radio contact with Earth, the mission begins to unravel and they find themselves fighting for their lives and the future of us all.

Fans of other Danny Boyle’s films will not be disappointed. His fantastic films include; 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Transpotting, The Beach and Shallow Grave. The films delivers in every aspect. Unfortunately, the advertising campaign wasn’t very strong for this round of Danny Boyle’s film. And “Sunshine” only played in about 4000 screens. I luckily, found this on playing in a theatre near me when it was released in July 2007 and fell in love with it.

Overall “Sunshine” was a great, great, sci-fi film that would be shown to anyone who enjoys a good movie. I wish the advertising campaign would have been better because this is one film that should not be missed.

“Sunshine” uses a 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 which is a great choice for the Fox Classic. This film has great visuals, mainly scenes in outer space. Without giving too much away, the last 20 minutes of the film are amazingly done and the visuals should be nominated for an Academy Award. The transfer to Blu-ray is very well done. When I saw it in the theatre, I was worried about some of the segments of the film because they are darker and could cause the screen to be grainy. But Fox pulled through and did a great job in transferring all the great visuals that I saw in July onto my HD TV at home.

“Sunshine” uses English DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit) audio format. It is an excellent choice and again, Fox pulled through. The audio on this film alone is Oscar worthy. The films soundtrack, soon to be released, is done by John Murphy in an amazing way. Each scene in this film is memorable with the help to John Murphy’s soundtrack (OST). The Blu-ray transfer is great. The disc also features French Dolby Digital 5.1 and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound which are a little disappointing but didn’t affect the overall outcome of the disc. I would have liked to see the same DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 in the French and Spanish languages. But overall, the audio delivers past my expectations and I still plan on purchasing the “Sunshine” OST when it is released.

“Sunshine” features a new Profile, called Profile 1.1 which is newly released in 2008. The Profile 1.1 allows you to view the film in PiP. The smaller screen being the director commentaries and the main screen being the actual movie. The PiP option allows you to switch back and forth between the screens without pausing the movie. Fortunately, Sony updated their PlayStation 3 to enable this option a few weeks ago. It works beyond imaginable and I really think that this will leave HD-DVD in the dust.

The Blu-ray disc also features an Audio commentary with the Director Danny Boyle which is above par. 21 Video Diaries, all with the Director Introduction. 12 Deleted Scenes and an alternate ending. Two short films: “Dad’s Dead,” and “Mole Hills” which are mediocre. And the theatrical trailer.

The High Definition Exclusive content on this disc are probably the best I have seen on a Blu-ray disc yet. The “Enhanced Viewing Mode” which in the picture-in-picture video commentary are well worth the Blu-ray disc purchase alone (Profile 1.1). It also features a “Surround Sound Mixer” which you can take audio from the movie and listen to it by itself, or take your favorite parts and put them together. A subtitle trivia track, which is loaded will tons and tons of information about the movie, production, and actors. And a search content index. These are probably the best HD and extra conent features that I have seen on a Blu-ray disc and are well worth the price.

“Sunshine” is my favorite movie of 2007 and could possibly be the best Blu-ray Disc of 2007/2008. I can’t believe all the High Definition content on this disc and it is well worth the price. Profile 1.1, also known as “Enhanced Viewing Mode” is a great addition to Blu-ray disc and I believe this is what will bring Blu-ray out in the end (also the fact that blu-ray has Disney). I would highly recommend this Blu-ray disc to ANYONE who ones a Blu-ray disc player. A must buy. If I could rate this any higher I would.

Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008.

Director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) fortunately brings some crackle to this otherwise unexciting sci-fi drama about two once-dead, biologically-regenerated soldiers (Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren) who turn against one another when Van Damme’s character has memories of his previous life. Emmerich is typically only as good as his scripts, and this one is pretty flat. The two stars do exactly what you’d expect them to do and nothing more. John Ford remains the consensus choice as America’s greatest director, and his critical eminence dates from two films in this set. By 1934 he had been directing for 17 years, building a solid reputation as a Hollywood professional with maybe the best eye in the movie business. With The Lost Patrol (1934) and The Informer (1935)–made for RKO rather than his accustomed studio base, Fox–he took a decisive step toward establishing himself as a personal, at least semi-independent artist. Both films were stark dramas free of box-office compromise, glib heroics, or any expectation of facile happy endings. They were also more relentlessly stylized than anything Ford had done before … which both distinguished them in their day and left them vulnerable to dating when some of their experimentation proved rather dead-ended.

The Lost Patrol began Ford’s association with producer Merian C. Cooper, a partnership that would lead to the independent production company Argosy and the making of such fine, ultrapersonal films as The Quiet Man, The Searchers, and Ford’s celebrated cavalry trilogy. The story, by Philip MacDonald, concerns a handful of British soldiers cornered at an oasis in the Mesopotamian Desert (now Iraq) during World War I and slowly decimated by an unseen enemy. The strong visuals–baking sun, the undulating vastness of the dunes, the drift of ghostly mirages–befit a crucible of character-testing, with an unnamed Sergeant (Victor McLaglen) striving to keep at least one man alive as desperation, madness, and implacable Arab snipers take their toll. This DVD release restores six minutes of footage cut for a 1949 rerelease and rarely seen since.

Ford won the first of his four best-director Oscars for The Informer, an intense tale of “one night in strife-torn Dublin, 1922″ when a slow-witted I.R.A. strongman named Gypo Nolan sells out his best friend for 20 British pounds. On a budget that obliged him to obscure canvas sets with deep shadows and a persistent fog that underscores Gypo’s mental and spiritual confusion, Ford created a visual world akin to the German Expressionist classics of the 1920s. But the film’s inventive use of sound and an ambitious music score (by Max Steiner) commingling leitmotifs for half a dozen key characters also encouraged ’30s critics to hail it as the first classic of the sound era. That was overstating it (and more than a little amnesiac on the critics’ part!). Overstated, too, was Ford’s relentless Christ symbolism paralleling Gypo’s betrayal to that of Judas. Still, Victor McLaglen’s portrayal of the title character remains a triumph (McLaglen won an Oscar as well), and the film abounds in brilliant strokes: the silhoutte of a British soldier shining his flashlight on the wanted poster of Gypo’s friend, while Gypo lurks just outside the beam; the giant Nolan forever knocking his head on hanging signs or seeming to be crushed by low ceilings; the cacophony of cries and gunfire, and then crashing silence, as the Black and Tan raid the I.R.A. rebel’s home. Initially overrated, then relegated to museum status, The Informer awaits rediscovery as a dynamic motion picture.

The John Ford Collection includes one more mid-’30s RKO endeavor, Mary of Scotland (1936). Although handsome, this adaptation of a Maxwell Anderson blank-verse play about QUn Elizabeth’s northern rival never finds credible footing as a movie. Andrew Sarris is dead right in lamenting Ford’s version of Mary, QUn of Scots, as “a madonna of the Scottish moors”–Katharine Hepburn, inevitably. The most interesting thing about the production is the offscreen story, that Ford and Hepburn fell passionately in love, yet (perhaps) resisted becoming lovers.

From there we leap to the 1960s and two Westerns made under the aegis of Warner Bros. (Warner now owns the RKO library, hence this rather arbitrary set.) Sergeant Rutledge (1960) has markedly improved with age, with what once seemed creaky dramaturgy now playing as bold stylization. Using a jagged flashback structure occasioned by a court-martial at a Southwest outpost, Ford took an unflinching look at the legacy of race in America. The then-unknown black actor Woody Strode has a showcase role as a magnificent “Buffalo soldier” accused of the rape-murder of his commanding officer’s blond, white daughter and the murder of the commandant himself. Unfortunately, Ford’s once-masterly handling of character actors had grown lax, and he indulged some tedious bombast from Willis Bouchey and Carleton Young as the presiding judge and prosecutor, respectively; and Jeffrey Hunter, however effective in The Searchers, made a weak protagonist as Rutledge’s defense counsel. But the veteran cameraman Bert Glennon almost winds things back to Stagecoach days, occasionally turning the film’s Technicolor to very nearly black and white.

Another debt to race relations is addressed in Cheyenne Autumn (1964), a beautiful title to grace John Ford’s final Western. The film has moments of grandeur as Ford attempts at long last to “tell the story from the Indians’ point of view,” and it’s a pleasure to report that William H. Clothier’s majestic Technicolor compositions have been restored to their Panavision dimensions on the DVD. Ford is unambiguously supportive of the Cheyennes’ resolve to bolt their reservation in the desert Southwest and trek north to their ancestral lands. By contrast, most of white society, the military, the bureaucracy, and the sensationalist press are portrayed as insensitive, foolish, or hateful. However, the Cheyenne are nobly wooden, with all key roles played by non-Indians: Ricardo Montalban, Gilbert Roland, Sal Mineo, Victor Jory, and Dolores Del Rio (breathtakingly beautiful as ever). As for point of view, it’s sympathetic cavalry officer Richard Widmark and Quaker missionary Carroll Baker through whose eyes most of the epic narrative unfolds. –Richard T. Jameson

Let me preface this by saying I have lost and maintained a nearly 40lb weight loss through eating and working out. I’ve completed a half marathon, race 20 miles weekly and have done numerous workout DVD’s…including the current Biggest Loser DVD and even Jillian’s separate workout DVD’s. I don’t say this to toot my occupy horn, but to give you a gauge as to how someone who’s in top-notch shape views this DVD.

At least I understanding I was in pleasurable shape until I popped this DVD in. This is a crazy hard workout that will workout every fiber in your body.

Bob starts with Level 1 and gives you 20 minutes of heart pounding, scoot screaming and weight lifting cardio…at Level 1??

Jillian is next and she doesn’t fail at delivering a 10 microscopic, high intensity level 2 cardio workout. Like I stated earlier, I’ve got her whole collection of workout DVD’s and this 10 minutes with her, is objective as unpleasant (reliable) as a few of the 20 microscopic DVD’s I’ve got with her.

Bringing up the rear is Kim…and this one is a let down. For a level 3 cardio workout, she barely breaks even with Bob’s Level 1. Now, if you do all 3 in a row like I do, then it does salvage a dinky boring at the ruin with her, but if you honest pop in her part for 10 minutes, I don’t consider you’d be pushing yourself very hard. In my hold concept, the workout grief would have gone Kim, Jillian and then Bob…do those jumping lunges and sigh me that’s not Level 3 cardio!

All in all, this is a spacious workout DVD to add to your collection. The ability to customize your workouts is colossal and the some of the moves are recent and I’ve never done them before.

Start 2008 off accurate and lay down the cash for this. You won’t be disappointed in the workout it gives you.

As you can suppose by the screen, this workout is led by the three Biggest Loser trainers, Bob, Jillian and Kim. They are all outgoing and motivating and in this 50 petite workout, you will definately burn calories.

You can play any segment in any order which I like to avoid boredom, or you can decide some of the though-provoking premixes. Bob leads a bootcamp segment where you can do the moves with or without weights to earn it tougher if you want. Jillian doesn’t mess around with her high intensity drills. They are tough, but stick to it for a while and it will bag easier. Then at the destroy, Kim does kickboxing (which really gets your heart rate up) . Some of seasons 3 and 4 are here too and they ogle broad.

I like this workout because it’s tough and yet fun and I’ve only done it once so far, but I’m unexcited feeling it and can’t wait to try it again because I know it will gather easier and it’s a definate calorie and full burner.

Hong Kong wuxia films, or martial arts fantasies, traditionally sqUze poor acting, slapstick humor, and silly story lines between elaborate fight scenes in which characters can literally fly. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has no shortage of breathtaking battles, but it also has the dramatic soul of a Greek tragedy and the sweep of an epic romance. This is the work of director Ang Lee, who fell in love with movies while watching wuxia films as a youngster and made Crouching Tiger as a tribute to the form. To elevate the genre above its B-movie roots and broaden its appeal, Lee did two important things. First, he assembled an all-star lineup of talent, joining the famous Asian actors Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh with the striking, charismatic newcomer Zhang Ziyi. Behind the scenes, Lee called upon cinematographer Peter Pau (The Killer, The Bride with White Hair) and legendary fight choreographer Yun Wo-ping, best known outside Asia for his work on The Matrix. Second, in adapting the story from a Chinese pulp-fiction novel written by Wang Du Lu, Lee focused not on the pursuit of a legendary sword known as “The Green Destiny,” but instead on the struggles of his female leads against social obligation. In his hands, the requisite fight scenes become another means of expressing the individual spirits of his characters and their conflicts with society and each other.

The filming required an immense effort from all involved. Chow and Yeoh had to learn to speak Mandarin, which Lee insisted on using instead of Cantonese to achieve a more classic, lyrical feel. The astonishing battles between Jen (Zhang) and Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) on the rooftops and Jen and Li Mu Bai (Chow) atop the branches of bamboo trees required weeks of excruciating wire and harness work (which in turn required meticulous “digital wire removal”). But the result is a seamless blend of action, romance, and social commentary in a populist film that, like its young star Zhang, soars with balletic grace and dignity. –Eugene Wei
